ISA CLEVELAND SECTION PROGRAM

WEDNESDAY Janurary 8, 2020, 4:30 – 8:00 PM

 1 PDH will be awarded

About the Topic:

The visit shall include a brief presentation of the NASA Glenn Steam Plant with the New Controls and the method of steam delivery to the Glenn Buildings and Facilities.  Then we will tour the Boiler facility with a description of the operation of the 5 Boilers, Piping, Instrumentation, and the New Controls.

History of the Steam Plant:  The NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio is a research and testing facility constructed in 1942, whose primary mission is to develop science and technology for use in aeronautics and space. Steam for the site is generated in the central steam plant located on the east side of the facility in Building 12. There are five steam boilers.  The oldest Boilers, #1 and #2, were installed in 1949 with outputs of 35,000 lb/hr.  The newest Boilers, #3 and #4, were installed in 2013 and with outputs of 35,000 lb/hr.   The largest Boiler, #5, was installed in 1970 and it’s output is 70,000 lb/hr.  The plant operates continuously to deliver 100 psig saturated steam at 10,000-100,000 lb/hr to the site for building heat and process usage year round.  Steam is distributed to the facility by a network of over 13,000 linear feet of steam supply and condensate return lines. The distribution system was originally installed in the 1940s and much of it was repaired or replaced in 1992 (approximately 24 years ago).  Phase 3 is the most recent replacement efforts and is currently nearing completion with a Phase 4 currently in design. New Controls and HMI were installed on the Boilers in 2013.

Speaker Bio:

Jason Keister has worked in the gas / fluid transmission system industry for over 20 years.  Much of this time has been focused around pressure vessels / systems design and code compliancy.  He currently works as the Mechanical Systems Manager in the Systems Management Branch focusing on the base wide Steam, Chilled Water, and Natural Gas systems.  In the past Jason has held various roles in mechanical engineering, test engineering, and LabView programming.  He holds a degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Baldwin Wallace University with Graduate work in Fluid Dynamics at Cleveland State University.
